Breast Surgery Treatments
Level 2 Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction
What Is Oncoplastic Breast Surgery?
Oncoplastic surgery combines oncologic breast surgery (removal of cancer) with plastic surgical techniques to optimise both cancer clearance and cosmetic results.
Level 2 oncoplastic procedures are used when a larger volume of tissue needs to be removed, typically >20% of the breast. Without reconstruction, this could lead to breast distortion or asymmetry.
Common Level 2 oncoplastic options include:
Therapeutic breast reduction
Volume replacement flaps (such as local perforator flaps)
Reshaping of remaining tissue to preserve breast contour
This approach allows for more generous cancer margins without compromising the appearance of the breast — and is performed during the same operation as the cancer surgery.
My Approach
As a fellowship-trained breast oncoplastic surgeon, I specialise in Level 2 techniques to preserve breast aesthetics when large lumpectomies are required.
I work with you to:
Understand your goals for both cancer treatment and appearance
Assess your breast size, tumour location, and suitability for reconstruction
Plan a surgical approach that removes all necessary tissue while restoring breast shape
Match the opposite breast for symmetry if desired (e.g. reduction or lift)
What to Expect
Assessment of your cancer and breast anatomy
Discussion of all surgical options, including aesthetic and symmetry goals
Combined cancer removal and reconstruction in one procedure
Follow-up care, with wound monitoring and surveillance imaging
Option for opposite-side surgery for better balance, if appropriate
